Expat communities are in no way a new phenomenon, but, in the wake of the pandemic, they’re becoming more and more prominent in Europe and Asia. It feels like an extreme form of gentrification, with a strong colonialist overtone in some cases. And a significant proportion of the digital nomads in Barcelona seem to have no interest in embracing and nurturing its diverse, ancient culture at all.
